Over 44% of the US population is deficient in Vitamin D.

In light of the events going on worldwide, a lot of individuals are working from home. Being that I have worked from home on occasion, I have had days where I don't get a breath of fresh air or go outside.

Being isolated can be very depressing, yes, but staying indoors without sunlight can also lead to deficiencies in Vitamin D. In fact, over 44% of the US population are already Vitamin D deficient to begin with!

In this post, we wanted to bring about awareness to Vitamin D, something that can be easily supplemented with. It is one of the vitamins that I believe is essential for us to supplement with especially during situations like these.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is an essential micronutrient. Typically, the body produces Vitamin D from cholesterol if provided with sunlight. While we do receive it from direct sunlight, it can also be found in foods like dairy, fish, and eggs.

Vitamin D is found to improve cognition, immune health, bone health, and more. Deficiency of Vitamin D can lead to physical & mental health challenges, which is why we HIGHLY RECOMMEND supplementing with if you don't get frequent sunlight.

Since our technologically-advanced society, today is deficient in Vitamin D, we recommend either getting direct sunlight frequently or supplementing with Vitamin D.

Benefits of Vitamin D Supplementation

The following are benefits of Vitamin D Supplementation:

  • Helps with longevity: people who have higher Vitamin D in their bodies typically live longer as reported under this study.
  • Reduces the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease: The study above also mentions that individuals with higher Vitamin D levels typically have a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. 
  • Reduces blood pressure: people with higher Vitamin D levels have been found to have lower blood pressure than those deficient in Vitamin D.
  • Reduces the risk of catching the flu: In a double-blind study, scientists found that schoolchildren who supplemented with Vitamin D had reduced the risk of influenza.
  • Shown to help depression: In a study consisting of individuals with major depressive disorder, Vitamin D supplementation showed to help reduce depression.
  • Reduces pancreatic and colorectal cancer risk: As mentioned before, Vitamin D promotes longevity.

Taking Vitamin D

According to examine, supplementing with a dose of 1,000-2,000IU Vitamin D3 will cover the needs of most anyone.

While there are many forms of Vitamin D, D3 is typically the most effective to supplement with as our body uses it more effectively.

As Vitamin D is fat-soluble, it should be taken with a meal or with fish oil for efficiency.

Sunlight or Supplement: Vitamin D

During this time, we are recommended to stay indoors, yet this could lead to a deficiency in Vitamin D over a long period of time. If you have the supplement hanging in your cabinet, now is a good time to use it... you can also order some on Amazon!
